COVID-19 Update

Dear USIB Members,

There are new changes to the provincial “rules” around covid-19 health laid out by the province of BC. As of Friday, April 8th, 2022, unvaccinated people will be permitted to go to restaurants, movie theatres, indoor concerts and sports venues, and anywhere else the provincial vaccine card was required. Schools have also lifted their mask mandates. However, masks are still mandatory for medical settings, and it is still recommended that people wear masks as much as they can.

To protect members who are not vaccinated and those with health vulnerabilities, USIB wants to continue to be mindful of the dangers Covid-19 can bring to our small community. Wearing masks has proven to be successful in reducing the likelihood of covid-19 in community programs and USIB buildings and we want to sustain this success. With the new more transmissible variant of covid-19, we want to make sure we are taking the right precautions, especially in the early days of this new variant, as BC officials are expecting an increase of covid-19 cases in the coming weeks.

Thank you very much for your cooperation and doing your part in protecting each other in the

community.

2022 Fire Smart BC Conference: Building Collaboration and Community – May 11 and 12, 2022

The BC FireSmart Committee is pleased to invite you to the 2022 FireSmart BC Conference to be held in person, May 11-12, 2022 in beautiful Kamloops BC. The theme “building collaboration and community” expresses the areas of interest and issues we will be covering during the two-day event. You will listen to inspiring and renowned speakers providing up-to-date information on how to create wildfire resilient homes, communities and landscapes. With four keynote addresses, 14 workshops and two expert panels, there is something of interest for all attendees. Networking breaks and events will provide time for best-practice sharing and putting faces to names in the FireSmart BC world. We’re excited to create an environment where we can all learn and share our visions for a FireSmart BC.

The conference will bring together wildfire practitioners from all over BC and beyond. Speakers and workshops will investigate how to make BC homes, communities, and the landscape more wildfire-resilient in the future. BC has a diversity of fire-prone environments that bring a unique perspective to wildland fire challenges and opportunities.

This conference is open to all participants but will be of special interest to firefighters, First Nations, and local government staff who are implementing FireSmart initiatives within their communities using Community Resiliency Investment (CRI) funding. Wildland-urban interface (WUI) specialists (e.g., RPFs, RFTs, consultants, contractors, and other land specialists), landscape management agencies, rural or urban planners/managers, Office of the Fire Commissioner staff, emergency management staff, wildfire management staff, Local FireSmart Representatives, and Wildfire Mitigation Specialists will also find the conference useful and informative.

Early bird registration is open until April 7th and the cost to register is $350.00 per person.

This registration fee includes access to all sessions, light breakfast, lunch, a delegate bag and a networking reception on May 11.  After April 7th, 2022, the cost will increase to $425.00 per person, so please be sure to register on or before April 7th and take advantage of the early bird pricing!
