Prescribed burn scheduled near Penticton

PENTICTON – The BC Wildfire Service and Penticton Indian Band plan to conduct two prescribed burns in the South Okanagan, in the Meadow Valley area.

 

Prep work for this prescribed burn could start as early as October 27, 2023. However, the burn itself likely won’t occur until the Spring of 2024. The exact timing of the burn and prep work will be dependent on local weather and venting conditions. Ignitions will proceed only if conditions are suitable and will allow for quick smoke dissipation.

 

The prescribed burn is part of a larger ongoing project, with 80 hectares remaining. This prescribed burn will cover approximately 20 hectares in size.

 

The Penticton Indian Band and the BC Wildfire Service will carefully control and continually monitor the fires throughout the duration of the project. Smoke and flames may be visible from Summerland, Peachland, and surrounding areas, and to travellers along Highways 97 and Highway 97C. The purpose of this prescribed burn is to reduce wildfire risk, increase forest stand values, protect ecological values, and enhance cultural resource values. This prescribed burn will improve public safety through a reduction in fuel loading (standing and surface fuel) within the wildland urban interface (WUI). This provides a level of community protection from wildfire and supports the traditional use of fire as a tool to improve the landscape.

Category 2 open burning prohibition rescinded in Kamloops Fire Centre

KAMLOOPS – As a result of decreased temperatures, higher relative humidities, and good overnight recoveries, Category 2 open burning will be permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre, effective at 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023. The following activities and equipment will also be permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre:
  • Fireworks;
  • Sky Lanterns;
  • Binary Exploding Targets;
  • Air Curtain Burners; and
  • Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description
Category 3 open fires remain prohibited until noon on Oct. 13, 2023, or until the order is rescinded.

These prohibitions apply to all public and private land within the Kamloops Fire Centre jurisdiction, unless specified otherwise in an enactment (e.g., in a local government bylaw). Always check with local government authorities to see if any other burning restrictions are in effect.
Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
Wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility. Human-caused wildfires are completely preventable and divert critical resources away from lightning-caused wildfires.
